Storm Damaged Fence in Jackson: What to Do and Who Pays

What to do when a thunderstorm, tornado or fallen tree knocks down your fence in Jackson, MS: quick repairs, insurance, neighbor trees and temporary closures.

Storm Damaged Fence in Jackson: What to Do and Who Pays

Take photos before you move anything, then call your insurance company and a fence company. Jackson sees severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings mainly in spring and again in late fall, and the remains of Gulf hurricanes bring wind and days of rain. Tall pines and old oaks do much of the damage.

Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?

We can. Call or text with the length that blew down and photos of the posts. Broken posts and a section flat on the ground count as a major repair, $900 to $2,500 on national 2026 figures. After a storm that hits the whole metro, schedules fill in a day or two, so get on the list early.

My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?

Say so when you call. We can prop up what still stands and block the gap with a temporary panel, then come back for the real repair. Calls where dogs are in the yard, or where a pool is left open, go ahead of ordinary repairs.

Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?

With many companies there is, and some do not work nights or weekends at all. Ask before anyone drives out. A temporary closure now and a full repair on a normal weekday usually costs less than an emergency rebuild.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?

Often it does, as an 'other structure' on your policy. The deductible decides whether a claim is worth making, and some Mississippi policies have a separate wind or hail deductible. Your agent or insurer is the only one who can say what yours covers. We give you an itemized estimate to send in.

My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?

In most cases, yours. Insurers generally treat your fence as your property no matter where the tree stood. It may be different if the tree was clearly dead and the neighbor had been told. Put that question to your insurer. If the same fence style is still made, we replace just the broken sections.

The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?

Ask for the calculation in writing. Many policies pay what an old fence was worth, not what a new one costs. Send the adjuster our itemized estimate with photos and ask them to review it. If the offer stays low, a repair limited to the damaged sections may fit the money.

The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?

First find out whose land it stood on. A fence inside one lot belongs to that owner. For a fence on the dividing line, Mississippi's party fence law says each owner of land separated by a party fence must contribute a due share toward keeping it in repair (Mississippi Code section 89-13-13). We cannot locate a boundary. A licensed surveyor can. Our page on shared fences in Mississippi has more.
